Tragedy of the day

What to say about this?

There is a saying in Kannada. 'ಇಮಾಂಸಾಬಿಗೂ ಗೋಕುಲಾಷ್ಟಮಿಗೂ ಏನ್ ಸಂಬಂಧ?'
which literally translates into 'Whats the relation between imaamsaabhi and gokulaashtami?'

People today are bloggin, talking(in fact doing all sorts of things) about Barack Obama winning the elections in the US. I'm not pro Obama or against him. Why should people in India talk so much about him winning elections over there?

Some might ask the question that He will decide the relationship between India and US. About the IT deal which ends by March 2009. Some predict that he might close all the doors for IT in India from the US.

SO WHAT???

Arent we an Independant nation? Why should we care so much about policies made by some foreign leader. Arent we self sufficient? We should look out for opportunities within and not outside.

If you've gotta look at problems. there are hell lota them right here in this country. Please look into this. To mention some, there is the alltime debt of the country. Two months old financial crisis, never ending conversion and evangelism by the cemetic religions and what not?

Another saying from Kannada 'ನಮ್ಮದೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಸಿ ಹೊದ್ದ್ಕೊಳ್ಳೋವಷ್ಟಿರೋವಾಗ ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಗೋಜು ನಮಗ್ಯಾಕೆ?' translates to 'When we have so much to think of ourselves, why should one think of the rest?'

Please have your say here to what I say. Lemme reply to your comments.

I agree with you - India has gone mad about this election. A few people I know (who live in India) are saying, "Yes we can," and are overjoyed at the Obama win. I seriously cannot, for the life of me, understand what the hell they're so happy about. Did they help him win? Did he thank them personally? Is it even going to affect their lives?

Granted, it is a big win, but Obama is nothing to India apart from the US President. Let's get on with our own issues instead of fawning over this chap who isn't directly going to affect us. If there are fewer jobs from the US, we'll manage somehow. Their loss is someone else's gain.

Totally agree that there is no need for us to be following the US elections as it was done this time in the news coverage, be it News papers, TV or internet.

But, then we can also say that if there is elections in Delhi then I should not watch them. When there were elections in Karntaka the news paper in DElhi was equally filled with results. We are basically getting more and more connected. Too many sources of information exist today so we will have more information.

Then this US election had some historical moments - Black president so it was bound to grab more attention. It was all natural.

Now coming to our independent nes. What you said - are we not self sufficient, the irony is we are not!! Ideal scenario is we should be!! So there were lessons from all corners in the US election and the US recession.

US recession had lessons that we shouldbecome more independentt rather than dependednt on US in name of globalization. US elections had lessons that for once we need politicians on the same lines who at least in speeches(even if not reality) start putting the nation above the parties and regions.

@ ankurg - Look, I'm not opposing one following American politics or any other country for that matter. One has every right to follow what he likes. What I'm opposing here is that they are making a big news out of it, like say, A change has arrived in the WhiteHouse, there shall be change in the world... blah blah blah!!

Let them report that Obama won in the US elections. Why should they exaggerate? Some papers I saw that Obama was a bhakta of Hanuman and goddess Kali... something of this sort. He would be a friend of India and do all sorts of good things... things go on n on n on...

AS you said, Politics in Delhi should be covered all over the country coz thats the national news. Norms made by them directly affect us. (US policies are indirect is what I mean)... Publishing about Karnataka elections in Delhi is also valid coz thats the centre. All I say here is that nobody discusses here that 'Oh! BJP has won in Karnataka and we can expect so and so gains from it' or 'BS Yediyurappa is a fan of Jesus Christ??'... Most of them are not bothered.

Yeah, we might not be self sufficient, but I feel we're near to that. Atleast, self sufficient when compared to other poor countries. Why can't we look into issues rather than praising a foreign politician?

There might be valid points from Obama. I'm not rejecting that. I am against the hype the media is creating here in India with that respect.

Thanks for the long awaited comment. Keep visiting. Lemme see some entries in your blog as well. =)

For the second last paragraph, I can only say that its a vicious circle. media shows what people watch. Once media shows that stuff with more glamour and masala, more people start watching it. So it spirals and the circle goes on:)
